JAPAN

Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean with dense cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks and thousands of shrines and temples. Shinkansen bullet trains connect the main islands of Kyushu (renowned for active volcanoes), Honshu (home to Tokyo and Hiroshima’s atomic-bomb memorial) and Hokkaido (famous for skiing). Tokyo, the capital, is known for skyscrapers, shopping and pop culture.

TELEPHONES

If you plan to travel with an iPhone or other G3 smart phone, you may need to purchase an international plan to avoid being hit with a huge bill for roaming costs. WhatsApp is a popular way of sending free texts in Fiji, providing both parties have installed it.

The cheapest way to make an international call is to use an online service (Such as Skype of Google Voice) or use a phone card. When dialling abroad, dial 00, followed by the code of the country you’re calling, then the area code and number.

Important numbers:

– Country Code: +81

– Medical Emergency: 119

– Police: 110

Time difference: Japan is one (1) hour behind Sydney’s Eastern Standard Time and 2 hours during daylight saving

Passports & Visas: Participants with a valid Australian passport do not need a visa provided their stay is 90 days or less. Passport holders of other countries need to check their countries agreement with Japan

Health & Safety: No vaccinations are currently required to travel to Japan. While Japan is considered to be one of the cleanest and safest in the world, you should take the same precautions as you would in your own country
